When a new aircraft add-on is released for a flight simulator, some turn out amazing while others can be a bit disappointing. For some people it’s all about system depth and realism, while others care more about performance, visuals, or how fun the aircraft is to fly.

In your opinion, what really makes a great aircraft add-on? Is it realism, good performance, detailed systems, or something else?

Most gamers have that one game they have put a huge amount of time into. It might be because the gameplay is addictive, the community is good, or there’s always something new to do. What game have you spent the most hours playing and what keeps you coming back to it?

Over the years, the way people consume media has changed a lot. Instead of watching traditional TV or relying on big media companies, many people now turn to platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and social media to watch content created by everyday people. It feels more real and relatable because creators often speak directly to their audience and share their own opinions and experiences.

Another big difference is interaction. With traditional media, viewers were just passive watchers. Now, people can comment, join live chats, and be part of a community around the content they enjoy. This makes the experience feel more personal and engaging.

Creators are also able to focus on niche topics that might never appear on mainstream TV. Whether it’s gaming, flight simulation, tech, or any other interest, there’s usually a creator out there covering it. Because of this, many online creators have essentially become their own media outlets, building loyal audiences and shaping how people discover and consume content today.

I thought I’d make a topic about JoinFS as a few people have asked about it, especially when we talk about doing group flights. :check:

JoinFS is a small program that allows pilots to connect their simulators together so they can see each other flying in the same session. It’s mainly used by flight sim communities when they want to fly together but don’t want to rely on the built-in multiplayer. The nice thing about it is that it works across different simulators, so someone flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator can still appear in the same session as someone using X-Plane or Prepar3D. It’s also very lightweight and usually runs quietly in the background once it’s connected.

A lot of groups like using JoinFS because aircraft movement tends to be smooth and it works well for things like formation flying or organised events.

Getting JoinFS
JoinFS itself is free and can be downloaded from the official site: https://www.joinfs.net/en/

Just download the version that matches your simulator and run the installer like any normal program. Once installed you can start JoinFS and then launch your simulator as usual. When JoinFS opens it should automatically detect your simulator. If everything is working correctly you’ll see the simulator connection showing as active in the JoinFS window.

Connecting to a session
JoinFS uses something called hubs, which are basically shared sessions that people can connect to. Some hubs are public and some are private depending on the group running the flight. Once you connect to a hub you should start seeing other aircraft appear in your simulator. From that point you simply fly normally as you would on any flight, but other pilots in the session will appear around you in the simulator.

Model Matching
One thing people sometimes notice is that aircraft might not always appear exactly as another pilot is flying.

This is called model matching.

JoinFS will try to show an aircraft that is similar to the one the other pilot is using. If you don’t have that aircraft installed, it will substitute something close instead. For example, if someone is flying a 737 but you don’t have that exact aircraft, you might see another type of airliner instead.

You can improve this by scanning your aircraft folders inside JoinFS so it knows which models you have available. The more aircraft you have installed, the better the matching usually becomes.

Final thoughts
Overall JoinFS is a really useful little tool if you enjoy flying with other people. It doesn’t take much to set up and once it’s running you hardly notice it. It’s especially useful for community flights, formation flights, or when a group of people want to fly together in the same area.

Bush strips and mountains: what could be more fun?! This is a little hop across western Montana and eastern Idaho, taking in some of the smaller airstrips in the region. Your options at each field are: an overflight, a touch and go or, for the most daring, a full-stop landing and takeoff. (It's a good idea, before committing to a full-stop landing, to be sure you can get out again.

Note that depending on your simulator and scenery, there may be one or two strips unavailable to you. Also, the tracks connecting the airfields are not necessarily the quickest/safest routes between them.

We’ve officially launched, which is a big step, but behind the scenes there’s still a lot of building, testing, adjusting and figuring things out. The forum is currently running on ForumSpark, and like anything new, it’s a bit of trial and error while I get everything set up properly. Layout changes, categories, permissions, styling, features, I’m testing things, tweaking things, and learning as I go to make sure this becomes something solid and long-term.

Some things may move around. Some sections might change. You might notice small design tweaks here and there. That’s all part of the process.

The goal is to build this properly rather than rush it.

I also really want feedback. This isn’t meant to just be “my” site, it’s meant to be a proper community hub. If something doesn’t make sense, if you think something could be improved, if you’ve got ideas for new sections, features, or even design suggestions, I genuinely want to hear it.

I’m really proud to finally open this website and create a proper home for everything Empirekicking.

Over time, streaming has become more than just going live and ending the stream a few hours later. The community has grown, the flights have grown, the projects have grown, and I felt it was time to build something more permanent. Somewhere we’re not limited by live chat or social media posts disappearing down a timeline. Somewhere organised, structured, and built around us.

That’s why this forum exists.

Empirekicking has always been about passion. Microsoft Flight Simulator flights across the world, IVAO and VATSIM events, realistic operations, add-on reviews, testing performance, improving setups, building overlays, and constantly pushing things to the next level. But more importantly, it’s about the people who turn up, support, chat, and make it what it is.

This forum brings everything together in one place. Stream updates, flight planning, event announcements, YouTube discussions, technical talk, ideas for the future, it will all live here. It also gives you a place to speak properly, not just in a fast-moving chat. You can ask questions, give feedback, share your own content, and be part of building this into something bigger.
