Though Root is not open source like other chat clients are, the devs are clear with their privacy statement and best of all you don't need to upload an ID to access NSFW servers! You can also move your Discord server's layout over to Root. Unfortunately there's no way to bring members and posts over though. It's current in open beta right now, so give it a go and see if it's worth using it over Discord.

I heard about Root sometime ago, maybe it was your post on some forums. I haven't checked it yet and I am still with Discord. But the the day they force me to upload ID, I will probably look into alternative platforms like Root.

Looks like Root is now offering a monthly subscription called Sudo. It was announced and released yesterday, I don't use Root enough to pay for it but it's there for those wanting HD streaming.
