Stoat is another alternative chat client that's been worked on for a few years now. It's UK based, so they do have to follow their rules. The good thing about Stoat is there are css edits you can make to your servers to make them more unique. You also can access Stoat through a browser, something that other chat clients such as Root don't have support for yet. I used it for a little bit back when it was known as Revolt. I heard their moderation on the official server is a bit harsh though, so I'm not sure if I'll use their chat client again. Here's their website if you want to give it a go!

I’ve been using Revolt since they opened the public beta in late 2021. I even ported a bot I'd made for Discord (except the embeds works different than on Discord), but since its development seemed to be at a standstill and everything had stayed the same since I joined for first time, I ended up switching to Nerimity in 2025 after discovering it on Reddit, it felt more polished and actively developed than Revolt. I don’t know what it's like now since they changed its name and since it received a lot of attention because of Discord and its ID crap, but one thing I'll say cuz I decided to log in back just out to curiosity is that I don't like the new UI design.

I used Nerimity a little bit in the past, but it's been a while since I've used it. Likewise it's been a while since I've used Stoat too so I can't comment on that either lol. I've been hearing negative things about Stoat from users in the official support server for Root. I guess I'm not missing out on much, I couldn't get back into my Stoat account since I never got a recovery email and I forgot my password.

Even though I didn't use Revolt, I certainly had heard about it but didn't realize they rebranded to Stoat. Learning about these alternative platforms is certainly good because you never know when you have to leave these mainstream platforms.
