How Do DJs Decide What Songs to Play?

I am quite sure that DJs don't just play random songs. They read the room, they look at the time and they feel the energy before they play any song. If it's a morning drive, they will play upbeat but not too aggressive. In the afternoon, they will play something that will keep people going. The night is for slow jams.
