Why Do We Sometimes Prefer Sad Music When We're Already Sad?

E eLdavis · 2 weeks ago · 3 replies · 78

It might seem strange that when we're feeling down, we sometimes choose music that makes us even more emotional. Instead of distracting ourselves with something upbeat, we put on a sad song and allow ourselves to sit with those feelings. Why do you think sad music can feel comforting when we're already sad, and does listening to it actually help you feel better?

Some want to feel the full effect of every emotion. That is to say that they play sad songs when they are unhappy because they want to pour all the emotions that are in them. It is just a normal situation for a lot of people.

That’s because we want to experience something that we can relate with. The way out of the pain is in the pain. Listening to hopeful songs just does not cut it. When the song incites you to tears, you know you’re healing.

Because, precisely when you’re sad, it’s unlikely you’d want to listen to something happy; listening to something sad makes you feel as though you’re being heard—the sad song shares the pain with you.
