Should TV shows be allowed to leave major plotlines unresolved?

Sometimes, a TV show introduces an interesting mystery or storyline that keeps viewers guessing for several episodes, only to end without ever explaining what happened. Do you think unresolved plotlines can make a show more interesting, or should writers be expected to give viewers proper answers before the series ends?

I don’t think so, because if this were allowed, there would be many series that never reach an ending—and there’s nothing worse than a series without an ending. It doesn’t have to be a definitive conclusion—an open ending is fine—but there needs to be an ending of some kind.

I used to watch a TV show called Lie to Me, and it was such a good show that I got to season 3 and ended on a cliffhanger. A few months later, it was announced that they were cancelling the show due to lack of viewers, which was never the case, so we have no clue why it was cancelled really but it was a shame.

I don’t believe shows should be able to leave major plotlines unsolved, but if they can do it, they will, no matter if they annoy the fan base.
