One could join AA (Alcoholics Annonymous) a set up that helps addicts get out of the system I know a bit of this as the one who introduced it in India was a friend of the family. He himself needed help. He did a great job and today AA is established all over the country You can read more here

The best way to stop alcoholic addiction is to join a rehab. Many rehabilitation centers could offer help. However, one thing I have noticed is that if you do not have willpower, then nothing could help you. You need to have enough willpower and motivation to stop any kind of addiction.

The AA I am talking about does help alcoholics and the first thing it does is to help them develop that will power you are taking about They start with this prayer which is known as Serenity prayer

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

@iamawriter - I think that I am aware about the alcohol anonymous group you are talking about. In my own country, we have many rehab centers where they help drug addicts and alcohol addicts as well. In fact, one such kind of rehab center is in our vicinity as well.

I was lucky enough to just quit a few years ago.

One beer was giving me a headache, and this “craps” the next day.

No thanks. I quit and have been better ever since.

You can talk with a doctor or addiction specialist. You can also get medical help before stopping if you may be dependent.
