What money lesson do you wish you’d learned before starting a business?

Starting a business involves plenty of learning, but which money lesson do you wish someone had explained before you began?

For example, was it understanding the difference between sales and profit, planning for quieter months, or noticing how quickly small recurring expenses add up?

I run Finance Nest Blog, where my aim is to make everyday money topics easier to understand through clear explanations and practical examples. Business finances are a topic I’d like to explore more, especially the questions people face when they’re just getting started.

What’s one financial mistake you learned from, and what do you do differently now? Experiences from freelancers and side-business owners would be welcome too.

That's right! Before starting a business, one should know a few basic things, such as the location, the local community, and what sells well in that area. I also need to understand customer needs, competition, rent/lease/outright purchase, and available resources. Proper research helps one choose the right business and avoid costly mistakes and who knows it better than I do as a marketing professional.

As far financial mistakes, anyone can do that no matter how long he’s been in business.

I think it is selling on credit. I was trying to be a good seller and I used to give them my products on credit but it was my undoing as a lot of them went away with my money and that wrecked my first business. I didn't have capital again to restock my products. I was a retailer.
