Feedback wanted: a tool for finding local U.S. outage information

I run power-outage.org, a free website for finding U.S. power outage information by location and utility. I'm looking for feedback on whether people can quickly find their area and understand the difference between current observations and unavailable data.

The site has partial coverage โ€” it doesn't show every utility or every outage, and its coverage page explains exactly what's included and what's missing. What's there now: a national county map, per-state and per-county pages, a ~2,900-entry utility directory linking to each utility's official outage/reporting page, and live feeds from sources like DOE/ORNL ODIN, California OES, and the National Weather Service.

If this fits the section rules: https://www.power-outage.org/

One specific question: on your phone, when you open your state or county, is it clear what's currently observed versus where data is unavailable โ€” and can you easily find the utility's own outage page?

MSFS2024 Diagnostics Tool - V2 Coming Soon

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™ve been working on a small tool for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 that I thought Iโ€™d share here.

Itโ€™s called MSFS 2024 Diagnostics Tool. Basically itโ€™s designed to make it easier to check your MSFS setup and grab useful diagnostic information when youโ€™re trying to figure out whatโ€™s going wrong.

I originally started making it for my own use but decided to put it up on Flightsim.to in case itโ€™s useful to other people as well.

You can check it out here: https://flightsim.to/addon/114888/msfs2024-diagnostics-tool

Itโ€™s still something Iโ€™m working on so Iโ€™m always interested in feedback, especially if thereโ€™s something you think would be useful to add.

If anyone gives it a try, let me know what you think. ๐Ÿ™‚

Is AI as bad as it seems?

Obviously AI learns etc etc but is it as bad as it seems?

It can create cool graphics and be a source of inspiration but me and @Gizmo with our sites but sometimes the advice may not always be good. I heard a story someone asked AI what to do as having a bit of trouble in their relationship. It told them to split up and they did.

Do we take what AI takes as full 100% trustworthy truth or do people need a little bit of common sense when navigating AI?

Is AI the problem or is it the end user?

What have you all been up to lately?

What have you all been up to lately?

I've been spending a fair bit of time working on the site, changing things around and trying to get a few things sorted. Still doing the usual flight sim stuff when I get the chance too.

It's easy to get stuck doing the same things every week, so always interesting to see what everyone else has been doing.

Anything new you've been playing, working on or getting into lately?

If you could change one thing about your current PC or flight sim setup, what would it be?

Could be a new graphics card, more monitors, better controls, bigger desk or even just a better chair.

There's always something I'd like to change with mine ๐Ÿ˜‚

What would you upgrade first?

Do you remember the first game you ever played?

I can never remember the very first game I ever played; I just remember it being on the Atari when my dad allowed my brother and me to start playing on it when I was around three years old.

The very first game I ever remember playing was Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Master System, followed by Alex the Kidd, which was a built-in game on the Sega Master System.

Do you remember the first game you ever played?

Empirekicking Forum Update ๐Ÿ‘€

A lot has been changing around Empirekicking lately ๐Ÿ‘€

I've been working on the forum structure and giving pretty much everything a proper reshuffle. The aim is to make the forum feel like an actual community rather than just a place for my own streams and flights.

There are now proper sections for Empirekicking, Flight Simulation & Aviation, Creator Central, Community & Interests, Community Events and Support & Feedback.

Creator Central has also had a big upgrade with places for YouTube, Twitch & Live, Podcasts, Blogs & Writing, content creation, equipment, editing, social media, collaborations and sharing your content.

The aviation side has been cleaned up too, with areas for MSFS, Prepar3D and other sims, IVAO & VATSIM, online flying, real-world aviation, hardware and aviation screenshots.

I've also put Community Events into its own section so things like group flights, gaming sessions, challenges and other community activities have one proper place instead of being scattered around the forum.

But I'm not finished yet ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm still working through tags, labels, icons, descriptions, permissions, board arrangements and the smaller details that you probably don't notice until you actually start using the forum.

I'm also still playing around with the homepage and how everything is laid out to make it easier to find things and hopefully make the whole place feel more alive.

So yeah... the rebuild is well underway.

The main structure is there now. The rest is basically me going through everything with a fine-tooth comb and getting it all working properly.

This is only the beginning. ๐Ÿ‘€

More changes coming soon.

What's your favourite online route?

For those who fly on IVAO or VATSIM, what's a route you really enjoy flying?

Doesn't have to be a long route or anything special. Just somewhere you always seem to enjoy going. I've got a few routes that I've flown loads of times and still don't get bored of.

What's yours?

What aircraft are you flying at the moment?

What aircraft have you been flying lately?

I've got plenty installed, but somehow always end up going back to the same few aircraft. Sometimes it's nice to try something completely different though especially if you've been flying airliners for ages. What's your current go to aircraft?

I've been jumping between a few different things lately and always end up looking for something new to watch. Doesn't matter if it's Netflix, YouTube, TV or a film. Found anything good recently that's actually worth watching?

Empirekicking Has Had a Fresh Makeover ๐Ÿ‘€

Over the last few days Iโ€™ve been spending quite a bit of time working on Empirekicking again, and if youโ€™ve visited the site recently youโ€™ll probably notice that quite a few things have changed.

I wanted to give the site a bit more of an identity rather than it just being a forum with a homepage stuck on the front of it. So Iโ€™ve been going through the homepage, changing the layout, moving things around and trying to make the different sections actually feel like they belong together.

Iโ€™ve also been working on some of the content that sits around the forum, including new pages and different sections that I can hopefully build on over time.

Thereโ€™s still plenty I want to change. I keep spotting little things when Iโ€™m looking at the site and thinking โ€œthat could look betterโ€ or โ€œI could do something with thatโ€, so Iโ€™m sure there will be plenty more changes coming.

The main thing I want is for Empirekicking to feel like somewhere you can actually have a look around, find something useful, read what other people are doing and hopefully get involved yourself.

Itโ€™s still a work in progress, but Iโ€™m quite happy with how itโ€™s starting to come together. Have a look around and let me know what you think. If you spot something that looks odd, doesnโ€™t work properly or you think could be improved, tell me. Iโ€™d rather know about it than have something broken sitting there for months. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thereโ€™s plenty more planned, so this definitely isnโ€™t the finished version yet.

Sunday, September 20 - Island Hopping

A little jaunt from island to island across the Torres Strait between Australia and Papua New Guinea. Eleven takeoffs and, hopefully, eleven landings. The trip is 295 nautical miles; the shortest strip (pictured) is 1,530 feet. Full-stop landings at each strip are preferred, but for those of a nervous disposition a touch and go will do. Choose your aircraft accordingly.

Alpine Valleys Tour

A 5-Week General Aviation Journey Through the Alps

Over the next five weeks, weโ€™re going to do something special. Instead of the usual long IFR hops or airline routes, this tour is all about slow, scenic flying through some of the most incredible terrain on Earth, the European Alps. This route has been carefully planned using Little Navmap and SkyVector, not just to connect airports, but to follow the valleys and mountain corridors that make alpine flying so unique. You wonโ€™t be blasting over the mountains at FL300.

Instead, weโ€™ll be:

  • following winding valleys

  • crossing historic mountain passes

  • flying between towering peaks

  • and discovering beautiful alpine airfields along the way

This is the kind of flying where you constantly find yourself thinking: "Wowโ€ฆ look at that view."

The Journey

Weโ€™ll begin near the Mediterranean coast of southern France, where the terrain slowly rises toward the Alps.

From there weโ€™ll work our way across some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe:

  • ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท The French Alps

  • ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ The Swiss mountain valleys

  • ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Northern Italy and alpine lakes

  • ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น The Austrian Tyrol

  • ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฐ Ending in the High Tatras mountains of Slovakia

Along the way, weโ€™ll pass near some legendary alpine landmarks like Mont Blanc, massive glaciers, deep valleys, and mountain towns that look like they belong in postcards. Every leg brings something different. Some routes follow wide valleys carved by ancient glaciers, while others wind between steep ridges where terrain awareness becomes part of the adventure.

Aircraft

This tour is designed primarily for A2A aircraft, where the realism really shines when flying through terrain like this.

Recommended aircraft:

  • A2A Comanche

  • A2A Aerostar 600

  • A2A Bonanza

Anything cruising around 120โ€“150 knots will work perfectly. The goal is to enjoy the scenery, not rush past it.

Tour Schedule

Flights will take place:

๐Ÿ—“ Every Friday
๐Ÿ•– 1900Z

Each leg is planned to be around two hours, making it easy for people to join without committing an entire evening. The full journey is spread across five weeks. Legs and routes were carefully planned so they remain comfortable for GA aircraft and avoid unrealistic mountain crossings.

What Makes This Tour Special

The Alps are one of the most spectacular places in the world to fly VFR. Unlike many places where terrain is flat or predictable, the Alps create an environment where navigation, terrain awareness, and scenery all come together.

Youโ€™ll see:

  • glacier-carved valleys

  • snow-covered peaks

  • winding alpine rivers

  • historic mountain towns

  • and some truly unforgettable views

Some sections of the route pass through the same natural corridors that traders and travellers used centuries ago to cross the mountains. In other words, these valleys have been guiding people through the Alps long before aviation existed.

Now we get to experience them from the cockpit.

Multiplayer & Participation

This tour is meant to be a relaxed group flying experience.

You can fly:

  • Solo

  • With friends

  • On your favourite simulator

Multiplayer will be available using:

  • UniFly

  • JoinFS

so we can all share the skies together. Youโ€™re welcome to join one leg or the entire tour.

No pressure just enjoy the flying.

Weekly Flight Briefings

Before each leg, a dedicated forum post will be created with full details, including:

  • route information

  • airport history

  • what scenery to expect

  • navigation tips

  • SkyVector flight plan

That way, everyone can prepare properly for the flight.

Upcoming Flight

โœˆ๏ธ Alpine Valleys Tour โ€“ Week 1

Aircraft: A2A Comanche
Route: LFMU โ†’ LFMX
Departure Airport: Bรฉziers Cap d'Agde Airport (LFMU)
Arrival Airport: Montรฉlimar โ€“ Ancรดne Airport (LFMX)
Network: UniFly, JoinFS
Link/route: https://tinyurl.com/262jbxyz

Simulator: Any

๐Ÿ“… Flight Details

Date: Friday 3 April
Start Time: 1900z
Estimated Flight Time: 1 hour 48 minutes

If you enjoy GA flying, mountain scenery, and exploring new places, this tour should be a lot of fun.

Hope to see some of you in the skies over the Alps.

How is your 2026 going so far?

2026 hasn't had the greatest start for my family and me, with the sudden passing of my mum on January 23rd, 2026. It's been tough to get through, but slowly we are pulling back and starting to get back on our feet.

I have a lot to look forward to in 2026 so far, so I am looking forward, as I know that is what both my mum and dad would have wanted.

What are your plans for spring/summer 2026?

Spring 2026 is in full swing, and with how fast the months are flying at the moment, it may not be too long before we are into summer.

With spring and summer, there are plenty of opportunities to head out for days out, or even head away on holiday.

What are your plans for spring/summer 2026?

What TV shows are you currently watching at the moment?

As much as I spent time following TV shows that I enjoyed each time there was a new episode, I will admit that over the last 4 years, I have not followed TV shows as much as I used to.

At one point, I used to watch the new episodes of Chicago Fire every week without fail, but due to my life becoming quite busy, I am way behind and do need to catch up.
