I think it's going towards personalization and niche. So, there is no more one-size-fits-all kind of station we used to have. Things have changed now. But the only issue is that AI could possibly take jobs from the DJs. I have also seen some people say interactive radio is the future where the listeners will be able to control the playlist live. What do you think?
The truth is, the hardest part is money. You look at the server costs, licensing fees, data for streaming, equipment maintenance and some more. Everything is just costly, and if you don't have advertisers, you could run at loss. Another one is building audience because there are thousands of stations out there competing, getting people to tune in and actually stay is so difficult to be honest. Who is running a station? How are you surviving?
So many stations are claiming that they play "the best music" and "the hottest hits" but from the listeners point of view, every station look the same. They have the same playlist, same adverts, sometimes the same presenters. For me, differences should come from personality and the niche. You should focus on a genre like Afrobeats only, or you only specialize on old school songs. Also, is your listener interaction different? What are you doing differently generally?
