How Do You Handle Quiet Periods in Your Community

Maya · 1 week ago · 3 replies · 27

Every community experiences quiet periods, sometimes the quiet periodslasts few days, and sometimes it might last for weeks, even months. Sometimesthis is a temporary thing but sometimes it is a genuine problem. How do you distinguish a temporary dip from a genuine problem? What would you do to improve your community engagement?

I would listen to feedback by the members, and then I would adjust accordingly. I would also try to bring in new members and content by doing post exchanges and advertising on other forums. Boards being quiet can push away potential members who want to join, so always make sure to have at least some activity going around, even if it’s exchanges or paid posting.

I try to post on topics that usually get a lot of activity.

I’ll post something that stirs up the conversation again.

The idea is that people will be notified and want to come back and discuss things from the topic once again.

Sometimes throwing something in there that is a little bit controversial is a great way to start a new engagement on a once-active thread.

Just make sure you’re active as the forum owner. By being active, you’ll have a better chance of getting the rest of your community active.

Quiet periods happen more often on forums now than they used to say 10+ years ago, but there are ways that you can prevent those quiet periods.

I have found that when quiet periods hit on my forum, posting topics that are quite popular, and even topics that are open-ended questions, tends to help boost engagement again.
