Investigative Process on Forums

S Shawn · 1 month ago · 6 replies · 186

For my day job, I work in gaming surveillance. As part of my official duties, I perform investigations into control violations, criminal activity, money laundering, and fraud.

Investigating is a very thorough process that requires you to be unbiased, withhold opinions, and really pay attention to the details.

This skill is something I’ve brought to forums. If an abusive incident takes place, I perform an investigation before I take action. I feel this is the best way to avoid taking the wrong action, which most always results in more unwanted results from angry members.

Do you also use the investigative strategy on your forum when dealing with abuse, or do you just hurry up, act, and beg for forgiveness later?

I think I would involve my staff in a discussion about said issue and we would all agree or mostly all agree on an approximate resolution.

I also believe that thorough investigation should take place before you arrive at any kind of conclusion. This is quite important when it comes to dealing with any kind of problem related to the members on the forum. I would certainly not hurry and take a decision it is much better to arrive at a conclusion at later time rather than hurrying up and taking an unfair decision. This is where forum moderators and other staff members could play a role.

I’ve seen it happen where it’s gone wrong and then the angry member then took a bunch of members and set up a new forum

That is a pretty loaded question.

I think we all know there is a time for investigation and a time for action.

And sometimes action when investigation isn't useful. Albeit only in obvious or extreme cases.

But if I make a mistake, I man-up and confess with a sincere apology coupled with anything I can do to rectify it.

But I NEVER beg for forgiveness. (I know you probably didnt mean that literally)

That only results in a subjective apology asking for something that isn't mine to ask for.

But I get it.

Bringing investigative skills to forum moderation is a smart move. When you investigate before you act, you are avoiding bias and making wrong decisions. I have seen many forum admins acting based on their emotion and that can cause a bigger problem.

Yes, it could be a smart move for sure. However, it is always important to never be “excessively conscious" about it. Otherwise, you may end up getting obsessed about it. It is always important to have staff members in your forum stay vigilant about the activities on the forum. This could help you deal with minor problems on your forum. This also includes cooperating with members as well.
