Light mode vs Dark Mode - which performs better for user retention?

Theme choice is often treated as a simple aesthetic preference, but it can significantly impact how long visitors stay on your site and whether they return. While automatic system matching is common today, setting the default theme for first-time guest visitors still plays a huge role in first impressions and bounce rates.

Which one would you set as the default? Have you noticed any difference in user retention between the two? Or do you automatically mirror their system settings?

Personal preference is light for a webmaster/admin type site and dark for a general discussion forum. No idea why.

Light mode for me! I know I'm probably in the minority these days, but I just prefer it. I think the best option for a website is to let people choose rather than assume everyone wants the same thing. A nice theme might grab my attention initially, but it's the community, content and overall experience that would actually keep me coming back : )

Hahaha nooo 😂 I actually really like how ChatterSpace is looking! Just because I prefer light mode doesn't mean I can't appreciate a lovely dark theme : )

What do you think of my site? https://watchmakingwebsite.com should I keep it the colour it is or should I make the main colour of the website the white theme (click it next to the forums near top right side.)

I am not sure some pretty prefer bright screen while some prefer dark screen also depending on the time of the day and what actually the niche is.

I actually really like the current colours! 😍 They give the site a warm, welcoming feel and make it stand out a little more than a standard white theme. I think having both options is ideal though, as everyone has their own preference. I’d probably use the lighter one during the day and switch to dark in the evenings : )

I usually prefer dark mode because it is much easier on eyes. Light mode is also good in case in you prefer light mode. However, this depends a lot on the appearance and theme of the forum. I usually access forum ay night, so I prefer dark mode.

I like ForumSpark because I can put it on system mode here so it'll do dark on my mobile and light on my laptop as I use dark mode for my phone.

I don’t really care about retention. If I want a dark forum - for whatever niche, I can just make one and the complainers can leave - LOL.

Well, I’m not some color fascist that’s saying gaming forums are only allowed to have a dark option, stuff like that.

But I can see avoiding dark for gardening forums or something, ha ha, LOL.
