When is it a good time to learn personal finance?

Yarik · 1 day ago · 4 replies · 46

At what age do you think it is best to start being taught personal finance? How important is it to understand it at a young age?

I would have liked to be taught financial skills by my parents when I was young, it would have saved me from a lot of mistakes and it would have improved my life from early on. I would start teaching my children finances at the age of 10, probably.

As soon as possible—there is no "right" moment; it is something you need to learn as soon as possible because it is vital for your life and for your well-being.

I think children should be taught about money from quite a young age, starting with little things like saving pocket money and understanding that you can’t always have everything you want straight away. As they get older, schools should be teaching them about budgeting, bills, credit cards, interest and debt. I wish we’d been taught more of that growing up! We learnt plenty of things at school, but not necessarily how to manage our wages once we started earning. 😂 It’s such an important life skill and one that could save people a lot of stress later on. ♡

School teaches us a lot of things, but never things that we'll actually need. From what I've seen, they just want us to pass the exams and that's all. Knowledge of the students doesn't seem to be a priority.

It depends on how advanced you mean in the way of finances. Children can learn how to save, but teaching them about investments and returns is too complicated. That’s something the 20-year olds should be learning.

In high school, we were taught how to properly write checks and that worked out great for me later on when I finally got a checking account. I know not all schools teach that, and that’s a shame.
