What should the homepage of a forum look like?

Glitch · 2 weeks ago · 12 replies · 204

How do you feel the homage of any forum should be? Very simple, or going all out?

I think that the homepage design of a forum needs to be simple and not overwhelming. Too much put into it can turn people away who are looking for a good forum to join. There are forums that I've seen where the homepage has a lot of going on. It's a big turn off to many people, myself included. Any forum project that I was asked to be a part of as an Administrator, Moderator, or Package Team Member always had an easy to to use homepage. Everything else on those forums were simple an easy to navigate as well. All my forums, which were on free forum services like Forum Promotion once was, were very easy on the eyes and welcoming to all. If members had any feedback to give, it wasn't about changing that.

I think that the homepage of a forum should look quite professional. It should be quite attractivem it should give a message to every visitor that should induce them to join and participate. Your homepage should also be related to the jixhe if your forum. This is one of the most important things out there. The forum itself should have a really fancy and attractive theme and design. These things are crucial for any kind of forum nowadays.

Keep it simple and straightforward—at least that’s how I think it should be. You can save the more complex options for after the user registers; if they log in and see too many choices, they won't know what to do.

It needs to give guests a sense of whats going on. I show all latest achievement pulls so people know what we do and get that “I want my data pulled too”

Sometimes just stand forums don’t attract people enough

The homepage of a forum should have a running slide. This really catches the attention of many people who visit the forum. Apart from that, the homepage of the forum should display current activities going on in the forum. This helps members to participate in online discussions. This also keeps the forum active as well. Apart from that, the homepage should also have a search bar and alerts page.

This is a good idea, but it needs to be as minimalist as possible and get straight to the point, because cluttering the homepage doesn't work either.

It varies from website to website. Simpler designs are often easier to navigate, while more complex designs can provide additional information and features.

The homepage should be clear, explain what the forum is about in the logo, and the parts you want active the most should be up top.

Board Structure: Put the niche-based sections first. Don’t put forum news or off-topic sections on top. You want people to see the meat of your forum first thing.

If I have to search or keep scrolling to find the on-topic section, I’ll just find a different forum.

You’re right; it should show what the forum is about and highlight its most important aspects, so that people know what it’s for and what purpose it serves.

Exactly. It should explain what the forum is about. So many are either too minimalistic for the sake of looking “modern and clean.” But forums are about discussion so you shouldn’t be frightened of writing a few words of explanation.

But it’s about striking the right balance and order of words, images, and content discovery.

Right, exactly—I think the exact same thing. It has to be a balance: you want to show what the forum is about, but without overdoing it to the point where it becomes confusing. In other words, you should show just enough of the best parts of the forum so that people understand what it’s all about.

I've tried to make the homepages for Spark Promotion and PopFuse as simple as possible while still having a space for what's going on and the latest site spotlights. I think the sidebar here makes it easier as I can put stuff in there too. PopFuse doesn't need a sidebar yet.

I have never been a huge fan of homepages for forums having too much going on. I feel that if you are going to have a homepage for your forum, it needs to be clean, have the important information front and centre or even the content you wish to be seen front and centre and it should be welcoming.

If I go to a forum with a cluttered homepage, it tends to put me off, and I click away.
