How are you adapting your site's SEO strategy for AI-driven search engines?

Midnight Gremlin · 2 weeks ago · 7 replies · 147

With tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews changing how people discover information, traditional blue-link SEO isn't the only game in town anymore. Over the past year, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) has become a huge topic for webmasters.

I’d love to hear how other site owners here are handling this shift:

  • Are you noticing a drop in traditional organic clicks, or are AI citations bringing higher-intent referral traffic?

  • What changes have you made to your content structure or Schema markup?

  • Are you actively optimizing for GEO, or focusing strictly on classic SEO?

I do not think that AI-generated content would ever succeed when it comes to SEO. GEO is an entirely different topic, as many people still prefer SEO-friendly content. Having said that, I do believe that AI could generate good content. However, it makes so many mistakes that it is impossible to rely on it. This is why it is much much to focus on SEO topics and content. I really dislike content generated by tools like perplexity. It merely copies information from inaccurate sources and publishes it. With such horrible tools, I do not think that it would be wise to depend on such tools.

AI search has really changes everything. The traditional SEO is not enough now. You need to find a way to also rank in AI search results.

I think the Google blue links are dying a slow death while AI summaries bury all the top sites. That's why clicks drop for many sites. So, you should learn about AI SEO, so you can rank in AI search engines.

Are AI search engines like Gemini and ChatGPT Search actually making traditional SEO obsolete? If blue links are dying and AI summaries are taking over click-through rates, how do we practically optimize content to get cited in these AI responses? Is AI SEO fundamentally harder than traditional SEO, or is it just a shift toward better structuring, brand entities, and direct answers? What specific tactics are actually working right now?

I’m not. I do not want my site easily discoverable to be honest. I’d like mine to grow with word of mouth. Gatekeeping kept the internet amazing, unique, and genuine. Now that the masses use it, it’s gone down hill significantly. I’d like to avoid the same thing happening to LonePortal as long as possible if I’m being completely honest lol

I continue to make high-quality content packed with value. I’m getting mentioned in a lot of AI answers. So, I’m doing something right.

SEO is just one distribution channel. I also rely on others.

SEO, social media, and substack are rented channels.

Word of mouth, email newsletters, my blog are all owned channels.

I also do offline advertising through public speaking and such.

If you just do SEO, you’re doing it wrong. Just like with income streams, you should always have multiple streams for marketing.

As far as I know, my forums and blogs haven’t been cited by any Gen AI tools. I used to get decent search traffic until a couple of years ago but search traffic has significantly dropped, thanks to AI overview and zero search click. I am trying to implement AEO/GEO but it isn’t showing results yet.
