Are Video Games Becoming Too Expensive?

T TheGhostWhoStayed · 1 week ago · 5 replies · 117

Video games used to feel like an affordable way to have fun, but these days, between rising game prices, expensive consoles, and paid DLCs, keeping up with gaming can cost a lot. Do you think video games are becoming too expensive, or are the prices justified by the quality and effort that go into making them?

Yes, they definitely are very expensive now. Base games tend to be priced at around 70$ now, and that is 10% of the average net monthly paycheck here. If you add DLCs, it can go to around 20-25% for a single game. And on top of that, quality only drops down…

GTA 6 standard: £70

GTA 6 Ultimate: £90

Then as you say will a DLC drop we need to pay for. They offer those shark bundles for online too. Before you know it within the first 2-3 months you’ve gotten Rockstar over £200 of your hard earned money.

100% yes. $70-$100 for a game is insane. $100 would get you a physic disc, and hundreds of dollars worth of physical content such as a cool helmet you can actually wear, a giant pipboy or w/e from fallout… you can actually wear. A giant dragon statue you can put up for display, and so much more! Now it’s $70-100 and you get the temporary rights to play that game on a system that they can remove at any time. You do not even own the games anymore, so what are you paying for? To lease out the game? That’s insanity to me lol

I agree. However, I remember my mom buying Sonic & Knuckles for me for $70 in 1994. That's probably over $200 in today's dollars. Some Nintendo games were $80 in the early 90s too.

Playing video games used to be a hobby that I found to be affordable, and would always buy the latest releases to play.

Nowadays, it is rare that I buy the latest games until I see them on sale, as they can be quite expensive, sometimes as high as £70 - £80, which can be way out of my budget, and sometimes not worth it if the game does not turn out to be as good as I thought.
