What software did you use first?

Ravenfreak · 6 months ago · 5 replies · 1K

Those who own or owned forums in the past which software did you go with on your first forum and why did you pick that software? My very first forum was hosted on Forumotion and honestly I probably should have picked a different host. They use phpBB and it's not beginner friendly when it comes to the permissions system! This was back in 2009 when I first made my very first forum and on top of not knowing what I was doing, I honestly didn't have much knowledge about the niche I made a forum about. :V

When I first started out creating forums in 2024, the first software I used was phpBB. At first, I really enjoyed it, but I used to have a lot of issues when it came to adding mods/addons to the software back then, as you needed to do a lot of template changes, and one mistake could break your whole forum.

I used Wordpress to build my first forum. I used Asgaros wordpress forum plugin to create my forum. My second and third forums were also built on Wordpress. After running 3 forums on Wordpress, I started using SMF, then phpbb, MyBB and finally Xenforo.

My first forum setup was pure confusion. I used some random free host, and I spent like 3 nights of no sleep trying to fix permissions, only to wake up to see that the site has vanish 😂 Honestly, beginners just need something simple, not all these complex setups that will frustrate you.

I'm pretty sure I had picked phpBB. Probably my first forum was a forum extension of one of my employment blogs. Those employment blogs were making good money around 2011, but by the time I had gotten into forums (my Postloop phase), they had slowed down to not that much.

SMF was the first software that I used.
It started my journey as a forum owner. I then started using vBulletin, and from there, I started using Xenforo.

I also used Wordpress, and Blogger.
