if you want to use an open source what software would you use, why would you use that software? I have used open source software like phpbb, mybb, and smf. If I am to use an open source, I would go with SMF, it is easy to work on, and it also has a great look.
phpBB is mine. It looks really nice and comes mobile responsive by default. I used to like MyBB many years ago but it's still not mobile responsive.
SMF is definitely my favorite open source forum platform. I also like phpBB and I am starting to like Discourse a bit too. The only downfall to Discourse is that you need a VPS and need to have some Linux knowledge to get it set up but it's not too difficult.
I've used phpBB lately on my forums because I have this premium theme I love that I put on them.
