generally speaking, I like to keep my expenses down, so most of the time I use default theme. If I find a good free theme, I might also use them but buying a theme for my forum is out of question.
What about you, do you buy premium theme?
This is a premium theme for phpBB.
I usually just stick to free themes. I never paid for a theme before, sure some of them look cool and come with additional things sometimes but there's lots of free themes that look good and fit the niche of my forum. Custom themes are also out of my price range, so I can't afford them either.
The default theme is still underrated. I used to chase fancy premium themes before, but it is quite stressful. Just a single update can destroy everything. Then, you would be debugging like it's a full-time job. These days I just keep things simple, fast loading and clean.
I love premium themes, but then again, you can make the default theme or a bland looking free theme look really good with modifications.
I almost always purchase a premium theme, they stand out and are feature-rich compared to free ones. I love the simplicity of free ones but premium themes can be more tailored and fit certain niches. There are also so many to choose from and so many talented theme developers. I have never requested a custom theme though personally, those are very expensive and outside of my price range. I don't think I would pay more than $60 for a theme, at least for a while. I do think that themes, specifically for XenForo, have gotten really expensive. I remember when they were around $25-40 and now most of the nice ones I've seen are $60-100
