Do you think cinemas are dying?

H Henry · 6 months ago · 7 replies · 24K

Netflix and related streaming apps have made it easier for people to now stay at home while enjoying movies that, on a normal day, would have made them visit the cinema. I've also noticed that the number of people who talk about going to the cinema has reduced over time. Does that mean that cinemas won't be a thing in the future just like we have a decline with music cds as related to music?

Netflix and other streamers have hurt theaters, but I don't think they are dying out yet, just struggling more than they like to.

I wouldn't say that cinemas are dying, I often see many people still going to the cinema to watch the latest releases of movies with friends and family, mainly for the experience you get at the cinema when watching these movies.

I also know that cinemas now offer the option to watch live concerts at the cinema as well, as my daughter and I often go to these for BTS and the members when they have concerts, and they are live-streamed in the cinema.

I think with the experience in cinemas watching movies and the option to watch live concerts, that is keeping cinemas alive, despite the takeover of Netflix and other apps.

That's it. The numbers that they've pulled in the past have reduced to a level that one can't imagine at the moment. It has not been business as usual for many of the cinema outlets.

Cinemas are not dying. I think that many people are watching movies in cinemas. There are many people who just need to watch their favorite movie in cinemas. Many people just don't go to cinemas that often as they may have a busy life.

I'd say the smaller the town, the bigger the risk the theater(s) will go under.

Theaters are incredibly expensive. I mean, a couple on a date would surely pay 100 USD these days, right?

The truth is that the cinemas are not dying completely but they’re definitely struggling. Data subscription alone is draining and that is why people naturally prefer downloading movies at home instead of spending transport plus the money for movie tickets.
