Forum or Blog? Which would you choose today based on the internet today?

Forums and blogs are still thriving on the internet, but many will say that blogs tend to do better than forums as it stands in 2026, despite forums still being widely used by many on the internet, even now.

If you were given an option to open either a blog or a forum today, and thinking about the two and how often each is used by internet users of today, which would you choose?

What would be your reason for making this specific choice between a forum and a blog?

How Do You Build Backlinks for Forums?

Backlinks are absolutely necessary for forums for search engine rankings, AI citations, as well as traffic. However, backlinks should come from authoritative and relevant websites. Sadly, it is really difficult to build backlinks from authoritative sites. One strategy that works for forums is joining other popular forums on the same niche and sharing your link in the signature and profile. You can also do guest posting on blogs and websites and link back to your forums. Publishing content on your forum niche on content aggregators can also help you build quality backlinks?

What methods do you use to build backlinks for your forum?

If you had to start a website from scratch today, what niche would you choose and why?

Let’s say you had to start a website you already had from scratch today; the whole website would be deleted, and you would be left with a clean slate, and you could either make a website in the same niche again, or you could choose another niche altogether when starting fresh.

What niche would you choose for your website? Would this be the same niche as the website that was just wiped clean, or would it be another niche?

What is one thing you wish you knew before you started a community?

Each of us, as community owners, had to start somewhere, and along the way of learning how to build up and run a community, we have made mistakes and even not been aware of some things we were doing wrong, or even missing out on doing when we started our first community.

What is one thing you wish you knew before you started a community? Have you learned from any mistakes?

How Do You Generate Steady Traffic On Your Forum

Forums need two things, one, engagements, and two, traffic. However, traffic and engagements both are declining on forums? When you might be able to generate engagements through paid posting, building traffic is really hard. As a forum owner, how do you ensure that you get traffic on your forum.

I believe the secret to consistent traffic on forums is evergreen content, evergreen content is the content that remains relevant over time. Unlike trending topics that spike and then fade quickly, evergreen posts keep attracting visitors month after month or even years later.

How often do you create content on your own forum?

No forum can thrive without new content being posted on a regular basis. When first creating and opening a new forum, many find it best to ensure they have a range of topics available for new members to respond to, and have said that has helped kick-start their forum after opening.

If you are a forum owner, how often do you create content on your own forum? Do you have a schedule you follow when posting new content on your forum?

What should the homepage of a forum look like?

How do you feel the homage of any forum should be? Very simple, or going all out?

I think that the homepage design of a forum needs to be simple and not overwhelming. Too much put into it can turn people away who are looking for a good forum to join. There are forums that I've seen where the homepage has a lot of going on. It's a big turn off to many people, myself included. Any forum project that I was asked to be a part of as an Administrator, Moderator, or Package Team Member always had an easy to to use homepage. Everything else on those forums were simple an easy to navigate as well. All my forums, which were on free forum services like Forum Promotion once was, were very easy on the eyes and welcoming to all. If members had any feedback to give, it wasn't about changing that.

How often do you issue the ban hammer?

Every community owner does not want to reduce their members by banning the ones that misbehave. Banning a member just means there will be less interactions. But it gets to a point where they are left with no choice.

To what extent does it have to go before you ban members?

How to start a blog in the horror niche?

I am really fascinated about the horror niche. It is one of the most mysterious niches out there. You can write about spooky stuff such as ghist, big foot, UFO, etc. There are just various different things you could write about. Having said that, starting a horror blog is not that easy. You need a lot of material and information to do that. So, what are your thoughts about this?

What made you start your first site?

I started my first website about 20 years ago. I was inspired by @cpvr when I joined https://virtualpetlist.com in its early days, which eventually led me to start coding my own site.

I learned a lot from a virtual pet site that had been hacked, and its code was released publicly. That got me into PHP programming, where I started making my own feature changes and fixing bugs. It was a great way to learn and develop my skills.

How about you? How did you get started with websites?

How do you deal with "toxic regulars" who are otherwise active posters?

Every forum webmaster eventually runs into that one member who poses a genuine dilemma for the mod team. They’ve been around forever, they account for a huge chunk of your daily post count, and they often start great discussions - but they’re also argumentative, passive-aggressive, or constantly pushing the boundaries of your rules.

Dealing with them is always a delicate balancing act. Banning a top contributor can instantly kill a site's activity and irritate the members who like them. On the flip side, letting their behavior slide alienates newer users, makes moderating look biased, and degrades the overall culture of the board.

Some webmasters prefer strict equality, enforcing bans the second a threshold is crossed regardless of post count. Others rely on quiet warnings, custom user groups with restricted permissions, or private intervention behind the scenes to keep them in check without a public blowup.

How would you handle a situation like that on your own forum?

How do you handle your forum’s welcome process?

When a new user registers on a forum, those first few minutes usually decide whether they stick around or never log back in.

There are completely different philosophies on how to handle that initial onboarding. Some forums set up detailed automated welcome emails with links to key threads and guidelines. Others use a dedicated "Introduce Yourself" board and push new members to post there first. Then there are webmasters who prefer manual, personal messages sent directly from staff to make newcomers feel noticed right away.

At the same time, a lot of communities barely do anything at all, preferring to let new users lurk or dive straight into discussions without any formal introduction.

I want to know how everyone here manages that first impression.

Do you publish quick tips on your blog?

Quick tips refer to small articles or guides that you could potentially publish on your blog. These guides are specifically created for readers and visitors who do not like to read lengthy articles. You could even tag estimated reading time above such short articles that could help readers realise how much time it would require to read the article. So, what are your thoughts about quick tips?

How do you handle moderation when you're sleeping or away?

One of the trickiest parts of running a forum is keeping an eye on things during off-hours. Spam bots always seem to strike in the middle of the night, and drama usually breaks out right when no admins or mods are online to calm things down.

Curious how you all handle coverage when you're away from your desk. Do you lean heavily on automated plugins, bring on staff from different time zones, or just hold new member posts in a queue until morning? Would love to know what tools or strategies have worked best for your community.

How do you kickstart engagement in a brand-new forum?

How do you get people talking in a forum that’s completely dead? Nobody wants to post in an empty room, but if nobody posts, the room stays empty. It's the ultimate chicken-and-egg situation.

I know webmasters use totally different strategies to get past this - from setting up staff seed accounts to fake early activity, to reaching out directly to paid posters, running giveaways, or building up a blog first to drive traffic before ever opening the board.

I'm curious how you all handle this stage.
