The Great Taking, David Rogers Webb 2023

One of the most interesting things about this book is that it forces readers to examine the legal structure underneath financial ownership.

Most people evaluate an investment by its price, expected return, and volatility. They rarely investigate who holds legal title, whether an intermediary has pledged assets, or how claims would be prioritized during insolvency.

There is a significant difference between ownership and legal beneficiary but there are protections. However, knowing risks is important in financial decisions.

Why Americans Feel Poor Even at $80,000 or $100,000

One thing I think gets overlooked is the difference between maintaining a lifestyle you already have and trying to establish that same lifestyle today.

Someone who bought a house 20 years ago at a much lower price may be in a completely different financial position from a younger family trying to purchase its first home.

Both households might earn $80,000, but those incomes don't necessarily provide anything close to the same living standard.

That's one of my biggest concerns with relying too heavily on national averages. They can obscure enormous differences in actual purchasing power.

It makes me wonder whether housing affordability, rather than simply the official inflation rate, would be a better indicator of how the next generation is doing financially.

Inflation Is Falling. So Why Are Groceries Still So Expensive?

Inflation Is Falling. So Why Are Groceries Still So Expensive?

Have you ever heard that inflation is coming down, then gone grocery shopping and wondered what everyone was talking about?

The explanation comes down to a distinction that is easy to overlook.

A declining inflation rate does not necessarily mean declining prices.

Consider a hypothetical grocery basket:

  • Year 1: $100

  • Year 2: $110 — a 10% increase

  • Year 3: $115.50 — a 5% increase

  • Year 4: $118.97 — a 3% increase

Inflation has fallen from 10% to 3%.

Yet the same basket still costs nearly 19% more than it did three years earlier.

This is called disinflation: prices are rising more slowly, but the price level continues increasing.

Actual deflation would mean prices declining.

This distinction helps explain why reports of declining inflation can feel disconnected from everyday experience.

There is also the question of wages.

Even if prices stop increasing rapidly, households may remain financially strained if their incomes have not caught up with the higher price level.

A lower inflation rate does not automatically restore previously lost purchasing power.

Nor do all prices move together. Groceries, housing, utilities, and insurance can follow different paths from the national average.

Here's the question: Should the public conversation focus less on the annual inflation rate and more on cumulative increases in the cost of necessities relative to household income?

Because knowing that prices are rising more slowly is useful.

But knowing whether people can actually afford what they need may be even more important.

Introduce yourself

Hi folks. I’m Itchdog (formerly known as Sledge). I started EvolvedOnes.net many years ago as a companion forum to a game server I was running for Freelancer called EvolvedOnes RP. I had another called ThePoliticalCapitol.com that was dedicated to politics and current events. The political forum had moderate success, but went the way of many forums back then. I recently re-acquired the Evo domain and decided to get back into politics and current events. And here we are. 😁

Welcome aboard! 😄

I'm building NOS, a place to fix and share HTML pages

Hi, I'm the maker of NOS. It started at work: we had a lot of internal HTML materials and needed one place to collect and share them. So NOS is a place where you keep documents and HTML pages together. On an HTML page, you can fix the text and share the page as a link.

Say an HTML report has a typo in its summary. You paste the HTML into NOS and see the rendered page. You click the sentence with the typo, rewrite it, and the matching HTML changes without you opening the code.

To share it, you log in and save. NOS hosts the page and gives you a link, so you don't deploy anything to your own website. Whoever gets the link opens it without an account. If you edit the text again later and save, they see the revised text the next time they open that same link, so you don't send a new one. You can paste, edit and preview without signing up: https://nos-workspace.com

AI helped with the wording of this introduction.

MSFS2024 Diagnostics Tool - V2 Coming Soon

I'm getting closer than ever to finishing V2! I've been working non stop on the tool over the last 24 hours and I'm finally at a point where I'm really happy with the overall design and layout.

There's still more testing to do and a few adjustments to make but my main goal now is to get V2 finished, as stable as possible and ready for release with as many features and improvements as I can get in before launch.

Once V2 is out, the work won't stop there! I'll continue improving the tool based on reviews, feedback, and suggestions from the community, alongside patches and updates to keep everything working as it should. After all, as Windows 11 continues to evolve with new updates, the Diagnostics Tool needs to keep up with it too!

There's more happening behind the scenes as well! I'm still working on updating the Diagnostics Tool FAQ and the website pages and I'm aiming to have all of that finished before V2 officially launches.

It's been a lot of work, but we're getting there! Thanks to everyone who's been following the progress and supporting the project.

V2 is getting closer! Stay tuned!

What vehicles you drive and/or like?

I like the Dodge Charger and Challenger. They are sporty and cool - but I've never owned one. The last car I owned was a black 2012 Honda Accord.

What motivates you to keep going?

Mental health was a real challenge for me for quite a while. I find connecting with others on forums really helps. When I was struggling with my mental health I had taken a break from forums so didn’t have any friends I could go to for help.

How do you begin the morning?

I start my day by checking my emails and seeing if there’s any important private messages on any of the forums I frequent. I then browse my own forums and also Forum Promotion to see what I need to reply to. My partner gets annoyed as I spend more time on the phone in the mornings than I do with him 😛

Is getting a degree a waste of time?

I’m studying right now part time but I’m doing it to challenge myself and at the same time have a bit of fun. I’ve completed a Level 3 and Level 4 New Zealand business qualification and I’m working on a level 4 Accounting qualification. I find this accounting qualification to be the most difficult out of the three. This one I’m having to produce reports on Xero but the last assessment I did, I got higher marks than I thought I would.

Do members complain about drama on your forum?

I’ve had some members complain about drama on forums I’ve run but I’ve really struggled with this at times especially if I’m close to one of them and I don’t want to take sides. It’s not so bad if I have other staff as I can go to them for their views. I’ve lost some members on past forums I’ve run because I took the wrong side.

Co-worker drama, how would you deal with it?

My partner has had a few issues with the assistant manager at his work as she has a habit of talking about people behind their backs and just being a Karen. The funny thing is his boss is my Aunty. They say don’t work with family 😛

NOS: fix the wording on an HTML report right on the page, then share it by link

With NOS, which I'm building, you can fix the wording on an HTML report or brief right on the page, before or after you've shared it. Written notes and HTML pages live in the same workspace, so a report and the notes about it stay in one place.

Paste the HTML into NOS and you see the rendered page. Click the text you want to change and type the correction. The text in the original HTML is updated to match, so you don't have to dig through tags.

To share it, sign in, save the page and create a NOS link. The person you send it to can open it without an account. If you spot another mistake later, edit and save again. When they reopen the link they already have, they see the saved correction, so there's no new link to send and no separate site to deploy. Pasting, editing and previewing work without signing up at https://nos-workspace.com/, so you can try it on one of your own HTML files first.
