Page templates and Advanced mode

Updated October 21, 2026

The normal Custom Templates surfaces reshape pieces of the board. Advanced mode raises the stakes: it unlocks page templates that control entire pages, the board index, the topic list, the topic view, plus the deeper partials like the forum row and the reply.

Turning on Advanced mode

At the bottom of the Custom Templates page sits the Advanced mode toggle. It exists as a deliberate speed bump: page-level customizations are more powerful and more personal, which also means they're more likely to want a review after big platform updates. Flip it on and the locked surfaces in the list open up.

How pages and partials fit together

Stock pages are composed from partials. The board index loops your categories through the category template, which loops its forums through the forum row template; the topic list renders each topic through the topic row; the topic view renders each post through the reply template. This composition is the part worth understanding:

  • Customize just a partial (say, the topic row) and every page that includes it picks up your version automatically.

  • Customize a page and keep its include lines, and your page still reuses your partials.

  • Write a page that drops the includes entirely, and you have full manual control of that page, while the partials keep working everywhere else.

All the safety rules still apply in Advanced mode: broken templates fall back to stock, every save is restorable, and each surface keeps its own on-off toggle. Advanced is deeper, not riskier.

Start a page template by reading the stock one; it opens prefilled. Seeing how the stock page loops your topics through the row template teaches the pattern faster than any manual.
