The shoutbox
The shoutbox is your board's open channel: a live chat strip where members drop a quick hello, a link, a reaction to the news, without the ceremony of a topic. It's real-time, so conversations actually flow.

Configuration, then Shoutbox.
Your controls
In Configuration, then Shoutbox you switch it on, name it, choose where it sits on the board, and post the rules line members see. Messages arrive live for everyone watching; moderation tools cover the shoutbox too, so the usual standards travel with it.
Should your board have one?
Honest answer: it depends on your size and culture. Small and mid-size communities love shoutboxes; they're the campfire everyone gathers at, and half of what later becomes topics starts as shoutbox banter. Very large boards sometimes find the firehose too fast to be cozy. It's one switch either way, so trying it costs nothing.
A shoutbox with the day's regulars visible in it makes the whole board feel alive to a visitor deciding whether to join. If you have even five daily chatters, that strip is marketing.
